Art & Design in Brussels

Investigate the architectural use of iron, glass and carved stone in Brussels, the capital city of the Art Nouveau movement. Victor Horta was the most famous Belgian Art Nouveau architect and his first building, the Maison Autriqueconstructed in 1893, has been restored and is now open to the public. It is a major building of historical interest in Brussels.

Have fun with your students at Horta's Waucquez warehouse which is now the Belgian Comic Strip Centre. Here you can find out how comic strips are created as well as view original drawings and props by the illustrators. Visit the Autoworld museum to see how cars developed from the late nineteenth century until the 1960s. Belgian production was at the forefront of early automobile developments. Trace Belgian style and innovations along with the general development of car design. Concept and future cars are also displayed in the exhibition.

The Royal Museums of Fine Art consists of several galleries housing paintings from the fifteenth to the twentieth century with Surrealism well represented by artists Rene Magritte and Paul Delvaux.
