China

Choose China for…

  • The duality of traditional and modern, rural and urban lifestyles
  • Tracing the continuity of culture and identifying the roots of modern science
  • Economy and industry in a rising world power

Home to the world’s oldest continuous civilisation and fastest-growing economy, China is a country where imperial palaces stand next to modern skyscrapers, Buddhist pagodas and sacred mountains overlook mega-dams and mega-cities, and terraced rice fields feed more than 1.3 billion. Now is an exciting and unique time for students to visit this rising world power.

Compare Beijing’s Olympic Stadium with its ancient Hutongs. Watch Chinese acrobatics, a Beijing Opera, or join an open-air Tai-Chi session. Live the life of an emperor in the Forbidden City and learn of massacres and mutinies in Tiananmen Square. Visit the panda park in Chengdu and contemplate the consequences of the Three Gorges Dam. Peer down on Xian’s 8000 terracotta soldiers, or stare up at Shanghai’s shimmering sky scrapers and emotive colonial architecture.

A spectacular opportunity for students to trace the change and continuity of culture, the roots of modern science and the capacity of human labour, China stretches the imagination further than ever before. Whilst investigating one of the most progressive economies of the 21st century and evaluating the importance of human rights, China invites students to view the world from an entirely different perspective.
