Art & Design in Prague

When in Prague a compulsory trip to the old Royal Palace is unavoidable and reads like a sightseer's shopping list. Housed in this extraordinary complex are three churches, a monastery, multiple museums, a crypt, a convent, a painting gallery and a palace. Here Kings, Emperors and Presidents have all spent time generating an edifice which charts the development of design over the past millennium.  Drop down the hill further into the centre, The National Gallery houses a superb collection of 20th century painting. Locate rarely seen Picasso portraits and paintings by the Austrian Secessionists, Schiele and Klimt who feature alongside other modern masters.

Art Nouveau plays a major role in the contemporary architecture of Prague and a visit to the Alphonse Mucha Museum will soften the severity of the street scene. Poster design graphic work, sketches and sculptures provide a comprehensive picture of this important artist. The Czech Republic is renowned for its animation, filmmakers and photographers with Joseph Sudek being one of the most famous. The ‘Poet of Prague’ took inspiration from the capital and has a number of small gallery spaces dedicated to displaying his highly evocative and atmospheric images.

The Danube has dominated the development of Prague and it is from the water where you will see the most dynamic views of the Castle. Walk over the Charles Bridge and take refreshment in the old square in the shadow of the famous Astronomical clock to contemplate the capital. You will discover behind the Bohemian facade Prague is a city of hidden treasures awaiting the intrepid and the open minded.
