Religious Studies in Prague

The city of a hundred spires is one of the best preserved and most beautiful medieval cities in Europe. Set on the hill the Hradcany, the castle district is dominated by the castle and St Vitus Cathedral and is the largest medieval castle complex in Europe. The main city square in the old town is the location of the famous astronomical clock and the church of St Mikulus is the most important Baroque building in the city.

Prague had an important Jewish community founded in the 10th century. Take a guided tour around the Jewish quarter to explore the history of this community, their traditions and religious practice. Visit the synagogues, Jewish town Hall, Museum and Jewish cemetery with its twelve thousand tombstones unbelievably crammed into such a tiny area. Investigate how communities with different religious beliefs coexisted in the city for many centuries and the restrictions imposed on the Jewish community.

Examine the appalling consequences of the ideology of the Nazi regime on the Jewish population in the city's museum.

Visit Terezin, a ghetto town and transit camp outside the city used to house the city's Jewish population during the Nazi regime where many thousands died or were sent on to die in other concentration camps.

At the Museum of Communism explore the affects of post war Communism on the city and its population. Investigate the changes since the Velvet Revolution of 1989.
