Located in the country’s south-west corner, bordering Italy and Switzerland, France’s Alpine region has an undeniable charm. Providing an inspirational and exhilarating arena for practicing and developing French language skills, the French Alps will leave a lasting impression on visiting students.
Home to Mont Blanc - the highest mountain in the Alps - the lure of this revered mountain range extends world-wide. Whilst natural features take centre stage, the mountains harbour charming pine-clad villages, seasonal farming hamlets and alluring cities. Annecy is well-known for its glittering lake, charming Old Town and snow-dusted mountain backdrop, whilst Chambery is renowned for its historical architecture and striking monuments. Jam-packed during the winter ski-season, many mountain towns enjoy peaceful summers, although summer-sports havens such as Chamonix are a magnet for rock-climbers and mountain-bikers.
Practise your shopping and money-handling skills as you buy souvenirs in Annecy and hit the hypermarkets in Grenoble. Get to grips with mountain menus, as you order fondue, tartiflette and chocolate-chaud in alpine restaurants. Extend your vocabulary of the natural world as you encounter gorges, glaciers, ice-caves and salt-mines. Gain a wider perspective of France’s diverse landscapes and inhabitants as you immerse yourself in the rich Haute-Savoie culture.
