With its historical links to England, Brittany has a unique appeal to UK visitors. Just a short distance across the channel, the region's strong traditions and independent culture allow students to develop their language skills whilst exploring a beautiful region with a unique identity.
An independent Celtic region until 1532, Brittany’s distinctive culture stems from its early British settlers and is noticeably different from other French region's. Renowned for its abundance of castle ruins and medieval wooden buildings, historical landmarks and intriguing legends are imbedded in Brittany’s undulating landscapes. The grand architecture of Rennes contrasts the region's peaceful villages and quaint coastal towns. Also, the Bretagne peninsula, France’s longest coastline, is renowned for its sandy beaches and pink limestone cliffs.
Students can ask for directions as they explore the ancient streets of St Malo and test their language skills by trying to uncover the myths of the city’s notorious residents. Develop their capabilities as they identify marine-life in the 360 aquarium, or ask why the region's interior is dotted with megalithic monuments. Students should acquire new terminology as they learn about the half-timbered houses in Rennes and the castle ruins in Le Guido. Take your group to make cultural comparisons with neighbouring Normandy and test their comprehension skills by translating creperie menus in Breton restaurants.
