Few regions in France have had as much impact on the English and British peoples as Normandy. The Bayeux Tapestry offers your students an excellent opportunity to examine an early example of political ‘spin’ with its masterful representation of the conquest of England from a Norman point of view. Nearly 900 years later, it’s the turn of the British (and the Americans and Canadians) to do the invading; though this invasion was a welcome one!
There is still much to see of the D-Day Landings, including the cemeteries, the remnants of the caissons from the Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches and the German gun emplacements at Pointe du Hoc. The cemeteries are a wonderful resource in terms of the pathos and respect they inspire in young people for the sacrifice made and the evidence afforded by the gravestones. The Caen Memorial Museum is not to be missed taking students on a journey of world events from the assasination of Franz Ferdinand in 1914 to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989; exhibits include an excellent overview of WWII events in the Normandy area.
Plus stay at our exclusive Château du Baffy which provides the perfect base for a tour of superb educational value and fascinating experiences.
