Paris has long been a magnet for creativity. Attracted by the chic sophistication of the cafe culture and the progressive revolution of the avant-garde, Paris remains irresistible for the aspiring artist. The stylistically diverse nature of this cosmopolitan capital is epitomised by the glass pyramid entrance to Le Louvre museum; a paradox within the Royal Palace. Here the Mona Lisa awaits; an exquisite detail among an array of fabulous painting. Across the River Seine is the impressive collection of the Musee D’Orsay where the art story continues through the Impressionists and the beginnings of modern art. Degas, Monet and Cezanne all vie for space with a who’s who of artistic heavyweights.
Baron Haussmann’s redevelopment introduced Paris to modern town planning and later the construction of the Eiffel Tower further embraced modernism. The Grande Arche in La Defense district is a must see for the aspiring architect coupled with the incredible industrial exterior of the Pompidou Centre. Here from the top floor which houses the Museum of Modern art, is a fabulous view across the city centre.
The cobbled streets and cafes of Montmatre create a wonderfully intimate evocation of heyday Paris where street artists continue to paint and perform. The Boulevards and open spaces provide a backdrop for the Bohemian and the backpacker. Paris is a city of contradictions so expect the unexpected and absorb the sophistication and the street scene with equal measure.
