Explore the compact city, swim in naturally heated pools, travel through lunar landscapes and traverse the Atlantic coastline, looking for reindeer, humpback whales and puffins. Explore the Hellisheidi Plateau and stand on the subduction zone of two tectonic plates. Key Information
Travel: STS offer tours to Iceland via aeroplane, with flight times of around 3.5 hours from the UK. In-country roads and airline networks are good.
Accommodation: A flexible choice of comfortable hotels, located close to Reykjavik, is offered on a half-board basis.
Weather: A sub-polar climate keeps Iceland on its toes for most of the year, and whilst summer temperatures in Reykjavik can reach above 15 °C, winters rarely rise above freezing. Within the school calendar May, June and July are the most comfortable times to visit.
Spending money: Iceland is one of the few European countries where daily costs can add up to more than the UK; students may decide to limit their Krona to a few choice Icelandic souvenirs.
