An extraordinary trip within a breathtaking ever changing ‘lunar landscape’. Take your students to witness nature’s immense power in creating contorted volcanic features, waterfalls, glaciers and colossal coastal formations. Iceland offers superb opportunities for physical and human investigations including cold environments, food and energy supplies, economic development and, of course, plate tectonics. The case study of the 2010 eruption highlights global networks, increasing interdependence and hazard management.
Explore the wild south with your students; where surging rivers meet dramatic black basalt coastlines. Peer down deep fissures on creaking glacial landscapes; get the binoculars out to identify volcanic features. Keep dry behind dramatic waterfalls or stroll within the diverging Mid Atlantic Rift itself assessing evidence of tectonic movement.
Gawp at Geysir where water seeps down to magma-heated rocks, vents hiss and steam, and spouts gush 20m high every few minutes. Round the trip off whale watching from a boat, the Icelandic word for beached whale means windfall or jackpot and you’ll certainly hit the jackpot if you choose Iceland for your geography trip.
