An open-air laboratory where scientific phenomena are part of everyday life, Iceland is a real treat for Scientists. Invite students to explore the potential uses of geothermal energy and witness the ability of humans to harness the power of the natural world.
Located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland is one of the planet's most tectonically active areas, enabling it to utilise geothermal energy more than any other country in the world. Renewal energy provides more than 80% of Iceland's supply and has transformed a once poor country, dependent on peat and imported coal, into a nation which enjoys a very high standard of living. Between the months of September to March, Iceland's skies are witness to a natural phenomenon, known as the Northern Lights.
Investigate geothermal energy at the Perlan building in Reykjavik and investigate how the city is run almost entirely on green energy. Debate the potential for sustainable living, when you visit the world's first filling station for hydrogen-powered vehicles. Examine energy and movement as you encounter evidence of lava flows in the natural landscape. Identify arctic species and plant succession by examining Iceland's diverse aquatic and terrestrial environments. Study the chemistry of geothermal water at explosive geysers and tranquil lagoons.
