Nearly two thousand years ago a large area of the Bay of Naples was swept away by the eruption of Vesuvius. Evidence left in the volcanic debris of Pompeii and Herculaneum tells compelling stories of the catastrophe. Details of the victims’ last moments will undoubtedly touch your students allowing them to relate more closely to the history of the ruined streets and the people who once lived there.
A visit to the extensive evocative ruins of Pompeii offers students an invaluable opportunity to discover the details of everyday life in a Roman City. Explore the homes of the rich and poor, step into former bakeries, bars, Roman fast food stores and brothels. The grandiose buildings will extend understanding of civic and religious practices, the importance of sport, entertainment and the cultural significance of Roman Baths. Students can examine aspects of town planning, architectural style and decorative art.
The smaller city of Herculaneum has buildings in a remarkable state of preservation, with elaborate mosaics and art work. Your students will be able to contrast the two cities and consider the role of Herculaneum as an early tourist destination.
Assess the aesthetic values of wealthy occupants at the sumptuous Villa Oplontis, through its preserved decorative art work. Witness well-preserved Doric Temples at Paestum and if time permits enjoy a trip to the island of Capri to walk up to Emperor Tiberius’s stunningly located Villa.
