Head for the sun and choose the beautiful Sorrento area to investigate a superb range of human and physical processes all within a surprisingly compact and easily accessible area. The Bay of Naples is noted for its unequal spaces with dramatically rugged mountains, coastal plains, peaceful villages and one of the busiest ports in the world. Located between Mount Vesuvius and the volcanic Phlegraean Fields, Naples city is divided between areas of severe economic deprivation and attractive regenerated historic quarters.
This is the world’s most densely populated volcanic region with Vesuvius, ‘The Sleeping Giant’ looming over the people as an ever present threat. Students can climb to the crater, examine changing patterns of Mediterranean slope vegetation and investigate surrounding fertile farming lands. Not to be missed is Pompeii, where impacts of the catastrophic volcanic eruption of AD79 can be witnessed in graphic detail and current strategies to manage potential future events can be assessed.
Students may be surprised by the lunar landscape of hissing fumaroles and bubbling mud pools at Solfatara. Enjoy the stunningly rugged Amalfi coast with its dramatic geological rock features. Or take a boat to Capri, playground of the rich and famous, to explore magnificent mountains and coastlines, and consider the island's very long history of tourism which dates back to Roman times!
