Art & Design in Florence

For all students studying the creative arts there is no better destination than Florence. Here, during the Renaissance, art was reborn and great artists such as Michelangelo began to change the course of art history. Their legacy remains to be discovered by the new generation of artists in some of the most important and resonant collections in the world. History of art students can, at first hand, see the detail and dynamism of Ghibertis ‘Gates of Parardise’ or scale Giottos tower adjacent to the magnificent Duomo which dominates the medieval centre.

At the heart of Florence lies the Uffizi gallery, which must feature on any itinerary. Here, Florentine art reveals itself in a chronological kaleidoscope of paintings and sculptures including Botticellis ‘Birth of Venus’ and ‘Primavera’. Architecture drove much of the revolution in style with Brunelleschi being at the forefront. His legacy punctuates the street-scene from the impressive cathedral to the exquisite Brancacci chapel; a mini masterpiece of design and form.

Florence is also a modern and cosmopolitan city full of the texture and vibrancy. Students can sketch the dramatic figurative sculptures and photograph the bustle of the market place, using these as inspiration for studio work. When faced with Massacios, ‘Holy Trinity’ concept will become reality as art history students further understand the influence of science and context in this golden age. Florence will embrace and inform providing an unforgettable experience rich with curriculum possibilities.
