Rome appears as an endlessly fascinating open air museum. Enormous carved fragments of architecture proclaim past glories in a city where Latin inscribed litter and soaring archways celebrate the victorious and the vanquished. Explore the vast Colosseum with its labyrinthine passageways to contemplate glories of the past. Study the reliefs of Trajan's Column or identify the designs which have been modelled on the landmark Arch of Constantine. These oases of archaeology provide tranquil spaces between the buzz of the Vespas and bustle of suave street life.
For a more spiritual reverie, the Pantheon is the oldest surviving roman temple with its hushed interior and incredible domed ceiling providing a real glimpse into the past. The Vatican City has a majesty of its own and a wander through the spectacular art collection is a must. Intrepid visitors will be rewarded as the tour culminates in the awesome Sistine Chapel; four years of achingly contorted, scaffold-assisted painting by Michelangelo created one of the worlds truly most inspirational art pieces. If the senses are not too weary a short easterly walk from the Vatican is the Borghese gallery full of High Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces. Rome will relentlessly bombard you with Bernini sculptures and Baroque fountains so try and avoid cultural overexposure with good planning. The ‘Eternal City’ may just need another look another time.
