Basking at the crossroads of Asia, Africa and Europe, the Mediterranean’s largest island is a melting pot of cultures and a superb destination for serious geographers.
Sicily’s stunning coastline is dominated by the smouldering Mount Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes. Ascend the mountain by cable car above slopes slashed by ancient fissures and journey by jeep through deserts of lava rubble to investigate landscapes formed by recent eruptions. Then descend to the black basalt-lined gorge of Alcantara, which carved its route through volcanic rock over millions of years.
Relax on a minicruise to the islands of Lipari & Vulcano, investigate mythical lagoon formations at Tindari or study the intense social and economic disparities of Palermo, where urban decay jostles side by side with elegant Byzantine palaces.
