It was here, in the fourteenth century, where politics and artistic patronage fused together to create the astounding artistic heritage of this region. Chianti vineyards, hill top cities and cypress trees form the Renaissance backdrops so familiar to all who have investigated Italian painting.
Florence at the heart of this region, combines intimacy and internationalism with a feast for the senses. Here Michelangelo, Brunelleschi and Donatello were amongst those who dominated the cultural revolution of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries creating some of the most enduring images, architecture and artefacts of this era. A visit to the Uffizzi will be a must for your students. Follow the River Arno towards the Mediterranean to Pisa with its iconic leaning tower. Head north where the robust town of Lucca awaits embraced with fortified embattlements, reflecting a turbulent history. Siena, to the south is another warring neighbour vying for land and recognition throughout the years. The brutally competitive Palio horse race held here in the magnificent scallop shaped Piazza reveals much about the proud people of this area.

Day 1:
