Art & Design in Venice

Built upon thousands of wooden pylons, Venice emerged from the marshy lagoon to become one of the most important cultural capitals of Europe. As the city grew rich from commerce, wealthy benefactors conspicuously created a dazzling array of Palazzo’s and public spaces intersected by canals and connected by bridges. The Grand Canal serpentines its way through this magnificence, a rich vein of marbled water mirrored by the architecture whose foundations it caresses. Venice has long been inspiration to travellers, artists and writers with its combination of melancholic majesty and vibrant atmosphere.

All ways lead back to Piazza San Marco dominated by the Byzantine splendour of the Basilica. Here, the magnificent Palazzo Ducale with its gothic galleried exterior provides one side of this impressive square. A short stroll through the cloisters into the labyrinthine passageways leads you to the Accademia bridge gateway to the Galleria dell Accademia; the most important collection of Venetian art in the world. Titian, Tintoretto and Bellini vie for space with Veronese in a wonderful selection of Italian painting. For a contemporary art kick try the Peggy Guggenheim collection for more modern masterpieces. Similarly, Ca Pesaro, further into the city, houses an exciting array of Klimt, Kandinsky and Klee above the museum of Oriental art.

Without cars, but with and street cafes and culture on tap, students will fall in love with the variety and vibrancy of Venice, soaking up the atmosphere and leaving satisfied.
