Geography in Japan

Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, this seismic archipelago offers diverse geographical studies. Your students can explore the mountainous interior to discover how agricultural techniques evolved to cope with the challenging landscapes. Today, Japan is heavily reliant on food imports as well as fuel and industrial resources; its world famous record of modernisation can be observed in its high-tech transport systems and dense urban centres.

Tokyo moves with energy and sparkle, its gleaming skyscrapers and shiny retail malls offer urban study opportunities very different from our own. Students will enjoy amazing views from Tokyo’s twin towers and be able to explore the city on a walking tour or delve into environmental matters at the Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. Witness how 20% of Tokyo’s Bay has been filled in, with the Airport, Disneyland and Yokohama harbour all built on reclaimed land.

Take your group on the bullet train to Kyoto to explore cobbled streets and ancient temples. Notice how the rich cultural history often relates to geography, for example in Japan’s beautiful Zen gardens rocks symbolise mountains and combed gravels evoke the oceans. With futuristic technology, volcanic landscapes and fascinating cultural heritage, Japan makes a superb visit for geography students.
