Choose Morocco for…
- Experience of a developing country
- Excellent examples of human and environmental interaction
- Appreciation of contrasting societies and diverse cultures
Morocco’s antiquated past and a fast-paced future can be found in every corner of the country, from the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, to the searing heat of the Sahara, and from the mayhem of Marrakech to the towel-lined tourist beaches. A country of contrasts, Morocco presents a unique opportunity for students to witness a developing country and consider life on the margins, without travelling too great a distance.
Contrast the ancient medina with modern city-life in Islamic Marrakech; investigate the impact of new economies, the boom of tourism and the resourceful approach to sustainability. Venture into the Atlas Mountains to discover the unique culture of the Berber communities and understand how they adapt to life in this harsh environment. Track the history of imperial cities and evaluate the benefits and challenges of hydroelectricity.
Morocco introduces students to a culture and landscape that contrasts dramatically with the UK. It informs their understanding of diverse societies and invites them to reflect on how their own values compare. Alongside specific curriculum objectives, students will experience the broad interaction between people and environment, and appreciate the challenges and opportunities faced by the wider global community.
