MFL in Marrakech

Classic Arabic is the official language of Morocco but French is taught universally and it is the country’s, unofficial, second language. With Spanish and English also spoken sporadically, a visit to Marrakech is a truly multi-dimensional language experience.

Morocco’s second largest city is located at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. With its fortified medina and adjacent modern city, Marrakech is typical of North African cities. Also known as the ‘Red City’, Marrakech is renowned for its sandstone buildings, and animated central square; it is one of the busiest cities in North Africa. Marrakeshians are educated in Classic Arabic but speak with a colloquial Berber dialect. French is used primarily for business communications but is spoken by much of the population and is the main language of the mass media.

Encourage your students to delight the Marrakechians by greeting them in Arabic, then study Moroccan current affairs by reading a French newspaper. Students can order fish tagines and hot mint tea in open air restaurants, haggle for leather bags and pottery in the souks, or shop for fixed-price goods in the modern district of Gueliz. Your group can experience Berber traditions as they encounter snake charmers and potion sellers in Djemaa El-Fna square and they can examine Morocco’s rich culture in detail at the Dar Si Said Museum.
