Dutch art has a particular quality of its own and has contributed significantly to the development of Art in the wider world. Vermeer, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Mondrian all origainte from Holland.
The Van Gogh Museum houses the world's largest collection of his work and students can track Vincent’s development and compare his paintings to other artists of the time. His personal letters to his brother Theo, are also housed in this museum. The Cobra group of artists, although not exclusively Dutch, specialised in semi-abstract works with brilliant colour, violent brushwork and distortion of the human figure. Their original works and development can be enjoyed at The Cobra Museum, along with examples from other Dutch artists of the late 1940s.
Dutch art flourished in the seventeenth century with Rembrandt van Rijn, one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European history. Visit the Rembrandt House Museum to admire his works. More up-to-date, the Stedelijk Museum has a collection of modern and contemporary art and design and an ongoing programme of current exhibitions. Relax outdoors in the Kroller Museum sculpture garden, which exhibits a wide range of modern sculpture in a national park setting. Its collection of paintings mainly focuses on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with works by Van Gogh, Seurat, Picasso and Mondrian.
