Environmental matters are at the forefront in the Netherlands. Battered by the sea for centuries, huge tracts of land were reclaimed during the last century. Today, impressive engineering projects mitigate flood risks along the coastline and lower reaches of the Rhine. The power of the sea and coastal security is clearly understood at The Delta Expo, which traces the disastrous 1953 flooding and explains how land below sea level is now successfully protected, populated and farmed.
Urban regeneration, integrated transport systems and sustainability issues are all very much a part of the Dutch experience; this of course the most cycle friendly country in the world! Your students can witness the significance and complexity of global trade at Rotterdam, climb the Euromast or take a boat for a fantastic overview of its busy harbour and container port. Escape the city to polders grazed by sheep and cattle, rippling flower fields, dune covered coastlines, and a chain of windswept islands. The gentle people and landscapes of the Netherlands make for a successful school trip, and all on the doorstep of the UK!
