Coastal engineering, hydraulics and marine life are everyday elements on the Dutch Coast, but exist alongside woolly mammoths, baby giraffe and flying cars; intriguing natural landscapes offer continual learning opportunities, with experimental technology to be found in the region's innovative science museums.
The Netherland's largest science centre, NEMO, is based in Amsterdam and contains five floors of science and technology exhibitions. A short drive away is the horticultural town of Aalsmeer and the Museum De Cruquius - a restored pumping station and interactive museum. In The Hague, the Scheveningen Sea Life Centre has 45 tanks packed with marine life, and in Rotterdam you'll find the popular zoo and fascinating Oceanarium. Further south is the Delta Expo - a flood defence system turned tourist attraction, where fossil excavation, seal habitats and a hurricane simulator are among the attractions.
Cosmic rain showers, giant dominos and high speed elevators are all part of the interactive experience at NEMO. Visit the Museum de Cruquius to experiment with hydraulics, or stop off at Aalsmeer to discover the science of flowers. Touch starfish at the Sealife Centre, study the life processes of baby animals at Rotterdam Zoo, or visit the Delta Expo to discover the fossilised bones of a 3.25 metre-tall mammoth.
