From the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, Krakow produced a number of talented artists. In the second half of the nineteenth century Jan Matejko gained international recognition for his gigantic, cinematic renderings of dramatic moments in Polish history. Matejko's paintings form part of the unparralleled collection of nineteenth century Polish Art, which can be seen upstairs in the Cloth Hall; the world's oldest shopping mall and part of Krakow's National Museum. In the museum itself around 500 works by twentieth century Polish artists are on display along with decorative arts and a collection of Polish army uniforms. The museum has several branches throughout Krakow exhibiting work from different times.
Krakow's Art Palace, opened in 1901, was the first Art Nouveau building in Krakow. The Vienna Secession had a large number of Polish contributers and the new avant garde ideas were embraced across Europe. Used as an exhibition venue mainly for prestigious high class art, this is not the place to see contemporary work. For contemporary exhibitions visit the Bunker of Arts, opened in 1965, nicknamed due to the design of the building. In May 2011 the Museum of Contemporary Art was opened and specialises in temporary exhibitions, although a small permanent collection is beginning. The new museum shares a site with the Schindler Museum and is of architectural interest. Krakow's museum of Aviation displays a collection of early aircraft dating from 1910. The Manggha Centre of Japanese Art and Technology is the biggest promoter of Japanese culture in central and eastern Europe. Your students will be able to see ancient handicrafts, ornate weaponry, porcelain and the fabulous Japanese woodcuts.
