A trip to Russia will allow your students to explore the legacy of a state controlled ideology. The Soviet Union was first to have the elimination of religion as an ideological objective. Encourage your students to examine how, and to what extent this objective was fulfilled.
Tour the elegant city of St Petersburg visit the Hermitage and other palaces of the Tsars to extend understanding of pre-revolutionary Russia and assess why the populace revolted in 1917. Step on board the Battleship Ship Aurora, whose gunfire signalled the start of the October Revolution. Visit St Isaac's Cathedral now a museum with its gold dome dominating the skyline. Participate in a Russian Orthodox service and evaluate characteristics of this type of Christianity, second only to the Roman Catholic Church in numbers of followers.
Explore Moscow where the symbolic onion domes of St Basil's Cathedral, watch over the political seat of power and cultural heart of the nation. Try not to get lost in the Kremlin, a city within a city, with its palaces, museums and cathedrals. Enable your students to imagine the huge displays of power which took place in Red Square and reflect on the turbulent past in Lenin's Mausoleum. Evaluate the changes in Russia since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
