Aachen is one of the nearest German settlements to the UK and is an accessible location in which students can develop competence in the German language and experience everyday life and authentic German culture.
Once a coronation site for the German monarchy, modern day Aachen excels as a base for scientific and engineering innovation. With a wealth of museums to choose from, Aachen offers an insight into the media and IT industries, as well as collating traditional crafts and artefacts in exhibitions across the city. Amongst these, the Couven Museum houses a selection of the region’s finest antique furnishings and the Ludwig Forum for International Art showcases an interactive collection of contemporary works. Aachen’s World Heritage listed Cathedral is a memorial and funeral site of the Roman Emperor, Charlemagne, who favoured Aachen over other German settlements. Visit the Rathaus to see the site of his fourteenth century palace.
Encourage students to ask for directions as they navigate the city’s charming Old Town and numerous shopping districts. Test their reading comprehension in the International Newspaper Museum and challenge your students further by tracing the history of the German monarchy at Aachen Cathedral or exploring palace life at the Suermondt Ludwig Museum. Visit in winter to scour the Christmas Markets for local marzipan and Aachen gingerbread.
