This compact city is found in eastern Germany. With its powerful history, stunning architecture and easily navigable streets, it offers language students an ideal opportunity to fully immerse themselves in everyday local life, as well as delve deeper into Germany’s vivid heritage.
Located in the heart of Saxon Germany, Dresden is a beautiful city, cut through by the Elbe River. Crammed with imposing palaces and magnificent churches, Dresden’s skyline is distinguishable by its impressive domes and slender spires. Salvaged from significant WWII bomb damage, illustrious landmarks include the Zwinger Palace and the Frauenkirche and Hofkirche cathedrals. The city is well known for producing fine porcelain and offers an abundance of fascinating museums.
Students can identify key features of the city as they ride over it in a cable-car or take a trip along the River Elbe. Challenge your students further by asking them which buildings survived WWII bomb attacks. Apply their understanding in new settings and expand their vocabulary base when you take them to visit the German Hygiene Museum and Dresden Energy Museum. Visit in winter to practice their shopping skills in the ancient Christmas market; keep your eye on the city’s calendar of music festivals.
