Art & Design in Munich

The highly frequented Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich connects with the existing 'old' and 'new' Pinakothek galleries to span a range of work from medieval times to today. The work is divided into architecture, painting, graphics, sculpture and design. It is possible to arrange an extensive tour of Western artefacts and the developments over time.

The Brandhorst Museum focuses on works from the second half of the twentieth century to the present. Exhibitions of a contemporary nature sit alongside permanent collections of works by significant artists such as Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol.

Another contemporary gallery with a nineteenth and twentieth century collection is the Lenbachhaus. In particular, it has a collection by the Expressionist group of artists called The Blue Rider. The Haus der Kunst has an interesting history. Originally designed as a showcase for German nationalistic Art, this gallery has housed international contemporary exhibitions since the war.

The Kunsthalle arranges high quality exhibitions displaying the works of many significant western artists, including Chagall, Magritte and Picasso. Thematic exhibitions cutting across time from 5000BC up to the twenty first century are also programmed.

The BMW Museum charts the development of BMW cars and motorcycles. Examples of these are displayed along with significant design changes and future design possibilities. Interestingly, the building itself is designed around a four cylinder engine.
