Art & Design in Berlin

The Bauhaus School of Design has played a big part in shaping the nature of design and architecture in the twentieth century. The Bauhaus Archive Museum of Design shows the entire spectrum of the design school’s activities across architecture, furniture, ceramics, metalwork, photography and theatre. Many artefacts and preliminary models, as well as examples of students' work, are on show. Enable your students to gain insight into the design process taught at this influential school.

German Expressionism flourished in the early twentieth century and although not all artists painting in this style were German, a significant contribution to this movement came from Emile Nolde, Max Beckman, Joseph Kirchner and Franz Marc. Die Brucke Museum holds the world’s most comprehensive collection of drawings and paintings by this important expressionist Art group; including sculptures, documents and various associated artefacts.

Spanning from the late nineteenth century, until now, the Berlinische Galerie houses 5,000 works including painting, sculpture and installations. Significantly, the fall of the Berlin Wall gave rise to a young art scene, represented here along with Dadism and Avantgarde works. The Berlin Puppet Theatre has puppets from all over the world in its collection. Enjoy seeing this fascinating means of expression and figurative sculpture. Dramatic drawings and woodcuts feature highly in the work of Kathe Kolwitz. See her drawings, paintings and prints at the Kathe Kolwitz Museum.
