MFL in Berlin

Experiencing Germany’s creative capital is a must for German language students. Berlin offers an exciting language immersion experience, as well as providing a powerful glimpse into the country’s past and an insight into today’s youthful cultural scene.

A hub for artists and musicians, and packed with striking sculptures and artwork, modern Berlin is recognised for much more than its divided history. Checkpoint Charlie and the Holocaust Museum are amongst the many reminders of WWII events. The East Side Gallery fuses history and modern creativity, with 106 paintings splashed across a section of the Berlin Wall. Of an earlier era, lavish Palaces reveal a historical extravagance and the eighteenth century Brandenburg gate still stands as the symbol of the city.

Students can interact with the locals and order ‘Kuchen’ at a café or ‘currywurst’ at a street stall. Take your students shopping skills to the Europa Centre, wehre they can compare this much loved landmark to the glitzier modern malls. Encourage your students to ask for directions on a tour of emotive war memorials and challenge their comprehension skills further by finding out about the German monarchy at the Stadtschloss or reunification at the Reichstag.  Students can visit the world’s oldest, large scale, film studio; keep your eye on the city’s cultural calendar to experience a music festival.

About the accommodation:
The hostel is within a 10 minute walk from the main train station in Berlin which makes getting to your points of interest very easy using both the S Bahn and U Bahn links. The hostel was finished being built just over 2 years ago, and reflects more of a young travellers hotel rather than the hostel that it is named. The hostel has plenty of public areas, from dining to lounging, and the friendly staff are on hand to assist you with general questions and directions. A&O have a number of hostels in different locations within Berlin and Germany that we use on a regular basis depending on the groups requests.
