Mountain peaks, plateaus and caves, grazing ostriches and whales in the wild Atlantic, this trip offers a wealth of geographical study areas and challenges students’ preconceptions of the African continent.
Enjoy the panoramic views as students rotate their way by cable car to the top of Table Mountain. Draw a field-sketch, label land-use, get geological, gaze over the oceans, spot the cute dassies darting in and out of the rocks and feel on top of the world on this landmark mountain. Investigate the history of urban clearance from District Six, and the township issues that developed as a legacy of apartheid. Reflect on social, economic and health disparities, on a tour of the oldest housing scheme in the Cape flatlands. Get involved with the amazing works of the Amy Biehl Foundation. Take a boat trip on an emotional visit to Robben Island, see the cell where Mandela was incarcerated for 17 years. Head for Cape Point, where warm Indian currents meet the Atlantic, investigate the unique fynbos vegetation, and look out for breaching whales along this dramatic coastline.
Journey through vineyards and lushly forested mountains to investigate ostrich farming in semi-desert scrub or take a stroll on a beach where penguins bask amongst granite rocks. A trip to South Africa is bound to surprise, exposing students to new experiences and challenging their geographical imaginations.
