Dramatic coastlines, mountains, canyons and abundant wildlife, this trip will certainly fill your students with awe and wonder and encourage enquiring questions.
South Africa presents an extravaganza of opportunities for physical and human geographical studies. Students will witness a superb range of river processes from mountain waterfalls, ‘Lucky’ potholes and gorges meandering down to wetland habitats, where hippos and crocodiles can be seen basking in balmy waters. Venture into the grasslands of the Kruger National Park to spot the ‘big five’. Encourage your students to question to what extent fragile landscapes and vulnerable indigenous cultures are being protected or threatened by tourism.
Visit a gold mining town and consider the challenges of working 3km below the surface. Reflect on conditions in Soweto, where a township tour exposes social exclusion and polarisation; your students will be amazed at the community’s wonderfully positive attitude to life. South Africa will astound, inspire and delight your students and encourage them to question diverse geographical issues and put their own lives into a new context.
