Geography in Andalucia

Be surprised by the contradictions of the ‘real’ Spain; white villages, buzzing cities, pristine beaches, mass-tourism, olive groves and snow capped mountains. One fifth of Andalucian territory is under environmental protection, which offers a wealth of opportunities for geographical investigation.

This region of deep traditions and conflicts throws up challenging environmental questions. How does the magnificent Moorish Alhambra Palace manage and sustain its tourist invasion? How can fragile ecosystems compete with the demands of intensive cultivation (for the UK market)? And how do golf courses, swimming pools and increased tourism compete with a policy to conserve dwindling water supplies?

Take your students on a tour of the Costas, analysing human development and tourist impacts. Head for remote inland areas for your students to gather data on agricultural strategies or sustainable energy. They will be dazzled by Europe’s largest solar farms and consider management approaches to control wildfire risks. Assess the regeneration of Seville and examine methods for managing the region’s rich cultural heritage. Walk through a gorge, investigate complex relationships between climate, soils and vegetation and visit Coto Doñana, Spain’s largest National Park to study fragile wetlands, deltas and sand dunes or count flamingos in a flock.  Don’t forget to tell your students to bring binoculars to spot wild boar, mongooses, tortoises and vultures!
