From waterfront rejuvenation and high tech business parks, to conservation of diverse architectural heritage, Barcelona makes an excellent case study to form an effective comparison with other urban studies, including London’s current Olympic developments.
Capital of Catalonia and Europe’s largest Mediterranean metropolis, Barcelona is a popular and exciting destination, ideal for collecting a wide variety of primary data on urban issues. Students can assess how the 1992 Olympics helped regenerate and re-brand formerly socially and economically deprived inner city sectors and decide to what extent the Olympic site itself was a success.
Drive up Mount Tibidabo or climb Gaudi’s extraordinary Modernist cathedral so that your students capture a bird’s eye view of the city’s layout. Evaluate the impacts of tourism on waterside areas or within the winding streets of the Gothic Quarter. Leave the bustle of the city behind for a chance to explore the region’s mountainous national parks, unique wetland habitats and coastal landscapes.
