Classics in Catalonia

Catalonia, part of the Iberian peninsula was conquered by the Ancient Greeks and Carthaginians and later became an important part of the Roman Empire. In 27BC Augustus made Tarraco the capital of his new Tarraconensis province, which roughly extends over modern Spain. In Tarragona, take your students to see the ruined city of Tarraco, a major administrative and mercantile city of Roman Spain. Tarraco is a UNESCO world heritage site. Students will gain an understanding of Roman military engineering through the construction of the city walls and fortifications. Examine artefacts uncovered in the region at the National Archaelogical Museum to gain a better understanding of daily Roman life.

Visit the aqueduct, locally known as Puente del Diablo, for students to examine how water was carried 40 kms to serve the population of the city. At Empuries, in the North of the region, a Roman settlement was constructed at the site of an original Greek city. Compare the way the Greeks adapted their buildings to the undulating terrain, whilst the Romans devised a linear settlement pattern to their city. Finish your tour with a day in the vibrant city of Barcelona; modern day capital of Catalonia. See the underground remains of the old city at Barcelona's History Museum.
