Wild coastlines, medieval towns, mountains, monasteries and mass tourism; this is an autonomous region with a strong sense of its own identity. Easily accessible, Catalonia can provide the geographer with a wealth of opportunities to study human and physical processes. Choose from several national park visits, such as Montserrat, the ‘serrated mountain’, where steep peaks juxtapose with flat terrain creating dramatic landscapes dotted with limestone formations carved by erosion and weathering. Or enable your students to study wetland ecology in Iberia’s largest delta, where habitats for migrating birds and flocks of flamingos compete with intensively farmed rice paddies. Students can assess the human activities that are predicted to cause the delta to recede by up to half during the next fifty years.
Head back along the coast with your school group, where crowded beaches serve as barriers to vulnerable hinterlands. Find evidence to show how water abstraction and upstream damming diminish natural beach replenishment and observe how beach materials are being lost by the action of the waves and by human erosion!
