On Spain’s north eastern Iberian Peninsula, Catalonia is one of Europe’s leading tourist destinations. It has a distinct culture and a unique history, with both classic Spanish and native Catalan languages spoken here.
This autonomous Spanish region is administered by its own government, the Generalitat. Its regional capital, Barcelona, is one of the most important ports in the Mediterranean. With a strong artistic heritage, Catalonian creativity can be seen in the Roman monuments of Tarragona, the gothic architecture of Gerona and in the contemporary artworks of Miro and Dali. With a 580 kilometre coastline, and abundant natural reserves, Catalonia is a magnet for marine and mountain sports. The Costa Brava, or wild coast, is known for its rugged landscapes, whereas the golden sands of the Costa Dorada are more popular with sun worshippers.
Test your students' speaking and listening skills as they tune into the Catalan dialect and order tapas in a local taverna. Enhance their understanding of Catalan culture as they explore Gerona’s Old Quarter and the historic city of Tarragona, or experience the regional traditions of fire runs and folk dance. Encourage your students to identify key features in the natural landscape; they can enjoy the hiking and cycling trails in the Catalan Pyrenees. Keep your eye on the region’s cultural calendar to attend a Catalan fiesta.
