From the outskirts Madrid appears as a low slung metropolis, its skyline punctuated with profiles of buildings reflecting its tumultuous history. Similarly, the city centre combines the old and the new with Royal palaces aside radical modernism. No tour to this cosmopolitan capital would be complete without a visit to Museo del Prado, where your students will see the heavyweights of Spanish art. Iconic paintings by Goya, Velazquez, Titian and Rubens are on display in one of the worlds most visited collections.
The Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum continues the story with a comprehensive collection of Impressionist and Expressionist painting and with the Prado forms 2 sides of the Golden Triangle of Art. The third is the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, a monument to modern architectural design with Picasso’s Guernica being by far its most famous masterpiece. This tour de force of historical painting still resonates within the current turmoil of world politics. Salvador Dali, another famous Spanish son, is also well represented here and hangs alongside Miro and other modern masters.
Take a day trip to Toledo. Perched on a craggy rock encircled by the River Tagus, the labyrinth of its streets and plazas is reminiscent of a North African medina. Your students will have plenty of opportunities to photograph and sketch diverse architecture styles reflecting this compact city's Roman, Jewish and Muslim origins. Visit El Greco's house, then enjoy a workshop at the Toledo Museum of Art.
