Basking in sunshine two hundred miles off the African coast, Tenerife makes a fantastic fieldwork destination at any time of the year. This is an island of volcanic drama, contrasting arid and tropical ecosystems, and the highest mountain peak in Spain.
Climb by cable car four kilometers into the clouds, for panoramic views from Mount Teide’s summit. Gawp at statuesque lava formations and hissing sulphurous vents or head for the wooded foothills to descend into a remarkable system of underground lava tubes. Encourage your students to assess water conservation strategies in the southern area where deforestation for sugar cane cultivation began several hundred years ago. Visit an Eco village, investigate intensive agricultural methods and taste Canarian bananas on a plantation visit.
Students can collect data on the impacts of mass tourism, stroll misty ravines and valleys. Or hop on a boat to see the basalt formations of Los Gigantes, don’t forget to look out for dolphins and whales!
