Art & Design in Edinburgh

For one month of the year the cultural centre of Europe is the Edinburgh fringe where the whole city becomes a stage showcasing the talents of contemporary theatre, art and literature. However, there is so much more to this cultural capital than the brash dynamism of the festival and Edinburgh can be just as rewarding throughout the year.

As the Royal Mile stretches away the imposing Castle looms over the city like a disapproving school master. Scene of incarceration, investiture and intrigue this collection of museums and memorials is a must for any itinerary. The Camera Obscura still holds a fascination to budding photographers and the gallery of distorting mirrors and morphing machines add substance to this attraction. From the roof top the powerful telescopes will pick out other impressive venues including the National Gallery of Scotland in the West End. Here be reminded of the Renaissance mastery of Leonardo and Botticelli while Monet and the Impressionists are also well represented. The National Gallery of Modern Art has two premises where student artists will be surprised by the quality of the collection. From Warhol to Woodman; Gormley to Giacometti, these displays both inside and out pack a serious punch. The permanent Paolozzi exhibits are a real treat and will cap a quality day out.

Edinburgh is a city with hidden cultural depths of surprising resonance and relevance to the creative arts. Not only does it display the granite and gravity of the past but it has the charisma and character of contemporary Scotland; a little wild, a little unpredictable but well worth a look.
