Art & Design in London

Investigate paintings from the most important artists and movements which shaped the History of Art at the National Gallery. Western European painting, from the thirteenth to the twentieth centuries, with a collection including Goya, Turner, Constable, Degas, Cezanne, Monet and Van Gogh.

Choose to visit either the Tate Britain or the Tate Modern or, ideally both to cover interests from the fifteenth to the twenty-first centuries. British and International artists are well represented in the Tate Britain, which owns the world's largest collection of works by Turner. Students can see how this innovative artist built up his canvases to give thick layers of paint and discover the looseness of his approach to watercolours. The Tate Modern presents past and present developments in Surrealism, Minimalism, Post War innovations in abstraction and figurative work as well as Cubism, Futurism and Vorticism.

The place to see today’s Art is the Saatchi Gallery, which specialises in exhibiting work by unknown artists, often launching their careers. London’s architecture spans various times and influences. Look out for examples of street art and witness the latest in architectural design, including the Shard, the EU's tallest building and the 2012 Olympic site. Take your students on a walking tour of the city to identify its key buildings from St Paul's Cathedral to Norman Foster's award-winning ‘Gherkin’.
