Geography in London

With the excitement of the Olympic Games there is no better time to visit London. The capital offers a wealth of fieldwork opportunities investigating issues such as migration, patterns of socio-economic disparity, environmental hazards and urban planning initiatives.

London was the world’s first modern city of over a million, and now lists with Tokyo and New York as the most important global financial centre. From earliest times a settlement grew on the bridging point of the Thames. Crucial to successful trading, in medieval times the river also became the city’s sewer, yet today the Thames is Europe’s cleanest metropolitan river, its banks commanding the highest property prices in the country.

Take your students to investigate ecosystems at Kew, take a boat trip to the Thames Barrier and get geological at the Science Museum. Map land-use and historical regeneration on a walking tour of the South Bank. Head east on a transect of urban renaissance: from 1970s regeneration in St Katherine’s Docks, to the 1980s Isle of Dogs extravaganza and then onward to the Olympic city, which has so recently swept away deprived areas of the capital. Challenge your students to look out for construction of the EU's tallest building and the new Olympic cable way. They can get a bird’s eye view from an open top bus or fly the London Eye to gain a fantastic geographical overview of this magnificent city.
