William Shakespeare’s birth and resting place receives around three million visitors each year and has been a popular tourist venue since the eighteenth century. Watching live performances of Shakespearian plays here is a rewarding experience, providing an enriched appreciation and renewed enthusiasm for classroom texts.
A market town in Warwickshire, Stratford-Upon-Avon is located on the River Avon, in the district of Stratford-on-Avon. The local landscape is imbedded with Shakespearian heritage, and was also home to his mother, daughter and wife. Students can experience five different properties and numerous landmarks which had an influence of Shakespeare’s life and works. Home to the Royal Shakespeare Company, performances can be seen at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and The Swan Theatre – both were recently refurbished, after a £112 million investment.
Students cam immerse themselves in the landscape of England’s most famous poet and playwright, drawing inspiration for your own creative writing. Encourage your school group to investigate the historical contexts in which Shakespeare’s works were written and consider the people and places that influenced his writing. Students will gain an understanding of Shakespearian plays and poetry on a whole new level and be able to evaluate live performances to appreciate the techniques used to convey atmosphere, tension and themes.

3 Days to Stratford Upon Avon
Day 1:
Morning departure from school, arrive at your accommodation. Time permitting go on a Ghost Tour of Stratford-upon Avon.
Day 2:
Visit Shakespeare's Birthplace which has been welcoming visitors for over 250 years. William Shakespeare grew up here and he played here. He ate meals in the hall and he slept and dreamed in these rooms. Shakespeare also spent the first five years of married life in this house with his new wife, Anne Hathaway. Continue towards the Falstaff Experience's Tudor World, a multi award-winning museum of Tudor life, which includes a gift shop and theatre, along with day and night time events. Within the labyrinth of rooms, visitors can experience the sights, sounds and smells of 16th century England and Stratford.
Day 3:
Visit the Anne Hathaway's Cottage, a thatched farmhouse with stunning grounds and gardens, which overflow with beautiful blooms, and traditional shrubs. The cottage is in Shottery, a hamlet within the parish of Stratford-upon-Avon. It is just over one mile from the town centre but can be accessed via a pleasant, well sign-posted footpath. Visit the Holy Trinity Church where both William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway are buried. Depart Stratford and return to school.
