St Ives has been a focus for artists from the nineteenth century. Most significantly the St Ives School of artists has contributed to abstract art and used subjects such as the surrounding landscape as a starting point to develop new forms.
Barbara Hepworth's Museum and Sculpture garden gives an insight into one of Britain’s most important twentieth century artists. The stunning light has attracted artists for decades including Christopher Wood, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth and her husband Ben Nicholson. Peter Lanyon was born in St Ives and his energetic works combine local land forms with abstraction to produce dynamic paintings.
Set in a superb location the Tate St Ives is an architectural gem, designed by husband and wife architects. Enjoy its diverse collection including the primitive artist Alfred Wallis who influenced Nicholson and Christopher Wood, and the paintings by Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Sandra Blow.
On the return journey, gain inspiration at the Eden Project where art, sculpture and plants are juxtaposed to interesting effect.
