Geography in West Country

Why travel abroad when so many geographical issues can be investigated within the rich landscapes of our own country? Examine shoreline processes and tourist impacts along crowded coasts, gasp at views from moorland peaks or unearth fossils ong the Jurassic Coast.

The West Country has its own distinctive culture and identity, with the warmest climate in the UK. Britain's south-west peninsula is mostly rural, with few sizeable settlements, its granite moorlands giving way to rolling chalk downs in the east. Traditional mining and fishing industries have declined in recent years. However, agriculture still shapes today’s landscape and tourism plays a significant role in the economy.

Take your students to visit the Isle of Purbeck to identify stacks, stumps and arches along the Dorset coastline. Count pebbles and gawp at the sheer scale of Chesil Beach. Explore narrow streets and investigate tourism in the historic port of Lyme Regis where a £21m coastal protection scheme is saving the town from slipping into the waves. Feel the heat of a tropical rainforest as you step into huge steaming domes, the ecological paradise of the Eden Project is a highlight of any trip to Cornwall.
