The synthesis of maths and nature is beautifully highlighted at Cornwall's amazing Eden Project.
The dome structures are ideal to investigate functionality of geometric shapes including the complex geodesic designs of the domes themselves. Begin the tour by recording the locus of the grand staircase and investigating rotational symmetry of the plants in the gardens. Head for the domes to examine transformations in structural design and identify wide-ranging 2D and 3D shapes. Focus on extraordinarily exotic plants to examine beautiful and contrasting patterns that have evolved over time. Enjoy the sculptures dotted amongst the foliage to discover strong links between art, nature and maths.
Visit the new education centre designed using Fibonacci numbers and spiral geometries. Observe curves in the interior design and record examples of the golden ratio. Estimate the height of the seventy tonne granite sculpture before getting involved in one of the Eden Project's excellent workshops.
The Eden Project can be booked in conjunction with other excursions including a visit to the At-Bristol Science Museum which offers interactive workshops and a Planetarium, or head for Techniquest in Cardiff, which has a significant collection of mathematical exhibits and puzzles.
