English in New York

New York has always been a city where writers have flocked to. Alongside America’s creative crowd, students can identify iconic landmarks, evaluate Broadway performances and draw inspiration to further develop their creative writing skills and appreciate the diversity of the English language.

Throughout history, the United States’ most populous city has inspired writers from Arthur Miller to Herman Melville, Norman Mailer to F Scott Fitzgerald. With evocative settings found throughout the city, key literary districts include Harlem, Brooklyn and Manhattan, with Tiffany’s, Times Square and the Algonquin Hotel amongst the notable landmarks. New York has been host to literary movements, such as the Harlem Resistance, and important groups such as The New York Intellectuals. Accompanying this literary acclaim is theatrical finesse, with Broadway shows a firm feature of the city’s arts scene since the 1880s.

Take you students to explore new settings and characters by comparing and investigating New York’s distinct districts. They can identify narratives and themes in Broadway shows, and explore identity and values as they gain first-hand experience of New York’s diverse cultures. Pick up a copy of the New York Quarterly for your students to appreciate the range of the city’s literary scene, then grab a coffee and a pen and join the freelance writers in New York’s coffee shops.
