Your students may only think of New York as a major shopping destination but it offers many opportunities to extend their knowledge of Politics. As the main target of the 9/11 attacks it offers a plethora of opportunities for students to consider the issue of the clash of civilisations that is at the centre of so much of the current global political debate. At Ground Zero there is the recently opened National 9/11 memorial and the accompanying Museum with its Wall of Faces commemorating the 3,000 victims of the attack. Nearby is the World Trade Centre Tribute Museum, which tells the story of 9/11 through the experiences of New Yorkers. Further away is the Ground Zero Museum which makes use of amazing photographs and video extracts to tell the story of the day.
New York is also the headquarters of the United Nations and a visit there not only provides a chance to see the General Assembly hall, but also a chance for your students to experience exhibits and archival audio. Any study of the USA has the melting pot of American society at its centre and so a visit to Ellis Island is essential. It’s a fantastic site full of fascinating material and the journey on the ferry is pretty special too, with its views of the Manhattan skyline.
