History in New York

The state of New York, the third largest in terms of population, was originally settled by North American tribes who sided with the British against the French in the struggle to dominate northern America.  The New York area was originally controlled by the Dutch and called New Holland until the British forced them to surrender in 1664.  During the American War of Independence (1775-83), New York was fiercely fought over because of the high proportion of inhabitants who remained loyal to the British crown.

Vist Ellis Island to trace the experiences of newcomers as they first arrived on American shores. Earlier migrants came mostly from northern and central Europe, later they arrived from southern Europe, especially Italy.  Between 1892 and 1924, an estimated 17 million people passed through Ellis Island. Many were poverty stricken and students can investigate their stories at the Tenement Museum where over time a single apartment became home to seven thousand people.
